Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive

Professor Peter John is currently the Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of West London (UWL); a post he has held since 2007. He is a graduate of the Universities of Wales, London, Oxford, and Bristol (where he obtained his doctorate). He is a fellow of: the Royal Society of Arts, the Higher Education Academy, the London College of Music, and the Institute of Couriers. He is a visiting professor at the University of Fuzhou, and the University of Shaoguan in South China, and holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Plymouth.

He is the founding chair of Learning Analytics UK, the chair of Access HE, and is a member of the London Higher Board as well as sitting on the executive board of Million+ (the Association of Modern Universities). He is also a member of the Higher Education Careers Service Unit (HECSU) Board and the JISC Advisory Board. He is a member of the All-Party Parliamentary University Group, and the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee. Additionally, he sits on the board of the West London Equalities Council, the Ealing Local Strategic Partnership Board, and the UUK student and policy network. He is a Director of the Drama Studio London and the Westmont Enterprise Hub.

In 2017, he was a finalist for the Guardian’s most inspiring university leader of the year. He is a patron of both the Ealing Music and Film Festival, and the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts while continuing to serve as a member of the Lord’s Taverners.

Peter is deeply committed to social mobility and recently set up the Centre for Levelling Up (CLUP) at the University alongside the National Educational Opportunities Network (NEON). He was awarded a CBE for services to Higher Education in 2020.
